Our Latest Application: Water Hygiene

CDL SmartHub

USE CASE

We’ve recently acquired a client that had genuine cause to ensure water temperatures at client sites were at the optimum temperatures to avoid the growth of Legionella disease. Legionella bacteria is commonly found in water. The bacteria multiply where temperatures are between 20-45°C and nutrients are available. The bacteria are dormant below 20°C and do not survive above 60°C.

Legionnaires’ disease is a potentially fatal type of pneumonia, contracted by inhaling airborne water droplets containing viable Legionella bacteria. Such droplets can be created, for example, by: hot and cold water outlets; atomisers; wet air conditioning plant; and whirlpool or hydrotherapy baths.

The primary method used to control the risk from Legionella is water temperature control.
Water services should be operated at temperatures that prevent Legionella growth:

  • Hot water storage cylinders (calorifiers) should store water at 60°C or higher
  • Hot water should be distributed at 50°C or higher (thermostatic mixer valves need to be fitted as close as possible to outlets, where a scald risk is identified).
  • Cold water should be stored and distributed below 20°C.

THE VALUE OF DATA

The battery powered, wireless sensors were strategically positioned to and attached to the pipework. The sensors are very quick to set up and in a very short time frame data is delivered at regular intervals to the CDLSmartHub.

All values from any sensor, in any location on any site can be viewed and analysed securely via any standard web browser. One of many other features is that each measurement can be configured with alarm levels, if any measurement goes outside of acceptable levels then emails and/or SMS messages are sent to configured recipients.

By implementing our remote monitoring solution, the client was able to reduce operational cost significantly, as they no longer had to schedule maintenance visits based only on their industry experience intuition. Instead, smart data now gives them the insights they require in order to make a real-world, human decision. This particular client were also able to increase their commercial revenues, by adding the solution as a value-added, proactive managed service.

HOW DOES THE SOLUTON WORK?

Our range of sensors are designed to capture data on a measurement point, such as water temperature. The data that is captured is sent up to our custom built, secure cloud platform for remote monitoring – CDLSmartHub. We call this end to end IoT management.

The below gives an overview of how the solution is architected and operates,
