Remote Monitoring for Water Quality Monitoring

[text]

Overview

Remote locations and large networks of water quality measurement points, can make water quality monitoring an expensive task. Traditionally, engineers would visit a site and manually monitor the water quality instrumentation.

Unless you’re lucky or have immediate customers complaints (and unlucky), the traditional approach isn’t capable of alerting you to water quality issues as they happen. In some cases it can take weeks and months for the issues to be highlighted, and longer before an engineer is available to rectify them.

We work with the people who make water quality sensors and instrumentation

By working with manufacturers of water quality sensors and instrumentation, we can provide real time water quality data from existing, trusted water quality sensors and instrumentation.

What we actually do is provide M2M Remote Terminal Units that integrate with existing sensors and instrumentation (See EXAMPLE 1). Using the mobile phone network these units seamlessly transfer data from the point of measurement to secure servers. Water quality data is then accessible via the CDLSmartHub, a Software as a Service (SaaS) platform for data management, visualisation, and reporting, or we can deliver the data in real time to existing data management systems through an API (See EXAMPLE 2).

EXAMPLE 1: Working with a leading manufacturer of sensing equipment we integrated GSM based remote telemetry to their existing Portable Turbidity Monitoring equipment which introduced a truly innovative Remote Turbidity Monitoring System, which is now being used by virtually all of the major UK water companies.

EXAMPLE 2: Working with Yorkshire Water’s Real Time Data Specialists, we were able to leverage their existing data management system, providing real time water quality data direct from our servers through an API.

What you can expect from our M2M Remote Terminal Units:

  • Battery or mains powered
  • Ultra low power consumption for long term installations
  • GSM communications through on-board modem, for remote installations
  • 18 variants of inputs, including 16 bit Analogue, digital, serial, CAN bus, GPS, I2C and SPI
  • Integrated SD card for storage of water quality data
  • Compact and robust design

Who are we?

Caption Data are remote monitoring specialists who have been delivering real time data to a range of industries from Construction to Marine Science and Engineering, Heritage and Conservation to Smart Buildings on University Campuses, and the Water Industry for many years.

Throughout our many years of experience and wide range of applications we’ve noticed a set of common challenges, which our remote monitoring solutions have been tried and tested in solving. Interested in hearing more about those challenges and how we solve them? Get in touch.

Vibration Monitoring at the Natural History Museum

Vibration Monitoring at the Natural History Museum Case Study Cover Image

Earlier this year, Caption Data was commissioned to install vibration monitoring equipment at the Natural History Museum.

Since April 2015, a team of conservator’s at the Natural History Museum have been using a remote vibration monitoring system made by Caption Data, to monitor vibration levels surrounding Cranbourne-1, the largest meteorite in the Museum’s collection, while heavy duty work has been completed in close proximity to the meteorite.

Since 2008 Caption Data Limited have been working with ATi UK to provide telemetry for a range of instrumentation. The latest application sees Caption Data’s RDL//nano integrated onboard ATi’s disruptive Turbidity monitoring technology.

Working with YW’s Real-Time Data Development Specialist, Caption Data were able to provide instant access to data as soon as it’s available, through a simple but secure connection between YW servers and their own.

Steve McGuin, YW’s Real Time Data Specialist says “Ease of integration is what we’re about. We were able to implement data from the CDLSmartHub against our standard structure by connecting our servers with Caption Data servers.”
